Abstract Totem: Manifesting Identity in Non-Representational Wood Design
After carefully considering the complexities of their personality, student designers create abstract portraits of their identity in the form of a totem section. This project challenged designers to employ principles of design and to communicate ideas visually while learning safe practices in the wood shop (using MDF material). Each completed totem section is painted and stacked creating tall collaborative sculptures.

Rhythmic Space: Expressing Mood in Music with Limited Materials (toothpicks, foam-core, and found material)
For this project student designers listen to a musical composition and create an abstract landscape using toothpicks and foam core that embodies the rhythm and flow of the selected song. Over the course of several class periods students responded to the repeated musical composition, then worked to complete their projects outside of class before critique.

Object Collisions: Employing Found Object, Color, and Selected Material to Transform Found Material
Student designers incorporate found objects with other materials to convey a concept of meaning that they select themselves. This project emphasizes material exploration and individual creative expression.

Material Feeling: Emotive Communication through Material, Color, and Physical Relationship to Viewer
Working as a group, students designers construct an artwork using only limited materials that communicate a specific emotion through color, surface, material choices, and the physical relationship of the viewer to the artwork.
